2nd Russian Film Festival in London
The roundtable is organised by Academia Rossica as part of the 2nd Russian Film Festival in London and will address the merging tendencies of fictional and documentary aspects in contemporary documentary filmmaking.
Documentary and fiction in film have always co-existed in a fascinating symbiosis often feeding off and inspiring one another. The tradition of documenting ‘real life' via the means of a moving image has played an important if not an essential role in Soviet and Russian cultural, social and political history. Documentary cinema has been used for both state propaganda and aesthetic self-expression; and often the two opposing purposes were paradoxically combined in one work. Throughout Russian cinematic history and still today, documentary and fiction, politic and poetics, continue to complement each other, provoking and inspiring filmmakers and scholars. Leading Russian and British filmmakers and experts will present their point of view on the subject based on their own experience and work. ... Speakers include:
