... Programme of
Documentaries
18-28 September 2008
This year, two Russian documentary filmmakers took the Cannes Film Festival by storm. Sergei Dvotsevoy and Valeria Gai Germanika received prizes for their debut feature length films. The 1st Russian film festival proved its ability to spot vibrant new talent when it screened Gai Germanika’s documentaries ‘Boys’ and ‘Girls’ in 2007, prior to her European success. The Russian film festival 2008 will continue to uphold its high standards by showing the best documentaries made in the last two years. The special documentary programme will include both feature length and short films of famous and emerging Russian filmmakers.
‘Documentary film-making has always played a key role in Russian cinematic history, beginning with the ground-breaking films of Vertov, who captured ‘life caught unawares’, to Peleshyan’s poetic creations, and not forgetting the recent success of Sergei Dvortsevoy. We hope that our selection reflects the rich history of Russian documentary filmmaking and demonstrates the continuing development of this art.’ – Alissa Timoshkina, Film Festival Coordinator
