The first Russian stand at BookExpo America

New York, 25 - 27 May 2010

This year the BOOKS FROM RUSSIA stand took part in BookExpo America, the main fair in the American book industry. The stand was organised by the Russian Federal agency for Press and Mass Communications and represented a range of Russian publishers. BookExpo America is currently undergoing major changes, transforming itself from a fair which focused primarily on the domestic market into an international book forum.

Vladimir Grigoriev, the Deputy Head of the Russian Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications attended a number of constructive meetings at the fair with representatives of the biggest organisations in the American book industry: the management at BookExpo America - director, Steve Rosato, commercial director, Michael Carluccio and manager of international projects, Ruediger Wischenbart; vice-president of the American Association of Publishers, Tina Jordan; American Booksellers Association CEO, Oren Teicher and representatives from Publishers Weekly and Publishing Perspectives. The meetings addressed questions of increased collaboration between Russian and American publishers and the promotion of Russian literature in the English language book market.

The BOOKS FOM RUSSIA stand became a meeting place for Russian and American publishers, literary agents and journalists. The stand also sparked a considerable interest in translators and slavophiles. The BOOKS FROM RUSSIA programme comprised of a number of presentations of publishers' projects, contemporary Russian authors and of the Russkiy Mir Foundation translation grants, which are organised in partnership with the Russian Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications and Academia Rossica. Academia Rossica also gave a presentation on the Rossica Prize, which was set up in collaboration with the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Centre, and called for submissions for the 2011 award.
