This year Russia was the Market Focus country at the London Book Fair. Over 70 Russian publishers and 50 writers took part in the Russian Pavilion, which was opened on 11 April by Mr Sergei Naryshkin, the Head of the Administration of the President of Russia. The pavilion was also proud to welcome special guests the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Kirill I and HE Mr Alexander Yakovenko, Ambassador of the Russian Federation.
Crowds ammassed to witness the comprehensive programme of presentations and seminars at the pavilion, which included the Hot Off the Shelf presentations, focused reviews of the best in new Russian literature, a special video link with the Internation Space Station to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Yury Gagarin's flight into space and the Book Expo America handover ceremony.
In addition to professional publishing presentations, a vast number of author events were held with acclaimed writers, such as Vladimir Makanin, Mikhail Shishkin and Boris Akunin, who was writer of the day at the book fair on 12 April. Russian poetry was also well represented, with performances from Lev Rubinstein, Dmitry Kuzmin and Andrei Rodionov, whose animated performance, accompanied by clips of Russia's latest literary phenomenon, video poetry, stunned all in the vicinity of the Russian pavilion. Russian non-fiction too featured in the cultural programme, with lively discussions involving Pavel Basinksy, Sergei Ivanov and Leonid Parfyonov.
