Rossica Translation Grants

for literary translation from Russian into English

.

Academia Rossica and the Yeltsin Foundation are launching a programme of grants for literary translation from Russian into English. This programme aims to promote Russian literature internationally and facilitate cultural and intellectual links between Russia and the English-speaking world.

We invite publishers and translators apply for funding to translate works from Russian into English. Usually it is the publisher who applies for a grant to cover both translation and promotion.

We are particularly keen to support projects that aim to bring original literary projects and works by contemporary Russian writers to a wide English audience. On the whole, priority is given to translation of contemporary fiction and poetry; literary non-fiction titles may also be eligible if they are exceptional in terms of literary or stylistic innovation. The scheme supports only translations from the original Russian text.

Applications for Grants for literary translation from Russian into English are considered every month. The decision on funding is taken by an international committee of experts.

Terms and conditions

.

The application should be made using our online application form, together with a written proposal. Please note that Grants for literary translation from Russian into English is a competitive scheme, and the level of demand is extremely high.

In the written proposal, the publisher or translator should explain the rationale for selecting the text or texts for translation, with information about the writer and the literary context. Any reader's reports could also be included.

As the quality of the translation is an important criterion, please also include the translator's CV. We recommend that the publisher also include a copy of the contract (or draft) between the publisher and the translator - usually based on the model recommended by the Translators' Association.

Please note that the scheme normally funds between 25% and 75% of the cost of a project. The budget should therefore include anticipated income from sales, in-kind support and other translation grants.

Another important criterion for assessment is strong and well thought out plans for the publication and distribution of the title. Publishers should include details of their plans for marketing, promotion and distribution once the titles are published. We are particularly interested in innovative, imaginative and effective ways of bringing contemporary Russian literature to a wider international audience.

Publishers of translations supported by Grants for literary translation from Russian into English are requested to put The Yeltsin Foundation and Academia Rossica logos on the back cover or jacket of supported titles.
