RYTP Shortlist

The judges of the Rossica Young Translators Prize 2009 announced a shortlist of 5 entries on Wednesday 22nd April at the London Book Fair during a special ceremony. They stressed that they were delighted not only to have received so many entries to the competition, but that the standard of those entries was so high. Coming to a decision, therefore, was very difficult.
The five shortlisted entries, in alphabetical order, are:
PETER BLACKSTOCK, University of Oxford (Bykov’s The List)
CECYLIA GRENDOWICZ, St Paul’s Girls School (Bykov’s The List)
JAMES RANN, SSEES (Bykov’s The List)
KELSEY RUBIN-DETLEV, University of Oxford (Slavnikova’s 2017)
LEO SHTUTIN, University of Oxford (Makanin’s Asan)
Congratulations to the above! The final decision about the overall winner will be revealed alongside that for the Rossica Translation Prize in a ceremony in London at the end of May.

The Prize

Hard on the heels of the successes enjoyed by the Rossica Translators Prize, Academia Rossica this year launched the inaugural Rossica Young Translators Prize for anyone aged under 25. Judged in tandem with the main Rossica Translation Prize, the winner will be announced at the Rossica Prize ceremony on the 24th May, Day of Saints Kyrill and Methodios, the creators of the Slavic alphabet. The prize will be adjudicated by the distinguished judges of the main Rossica Translation Prize, the experienced academics and translators; Martin Dewhirst, Professor Anthony Briggs and Professor Robert Porter. The winning entrant will receive £300 and have their translation published in a special edition of Academia Rossica’s journal, Rossica.

Everyone was eligible to enter as long as they fit the age criteria. Group translations were also permitted.

Translators were asked to select their text from the following three short stories/extracts by contemporary Russian authors, never before published in English:

  • Дмитрий Быков, Списанные
  • Ольга Славникова, 2017
  • Владимир Маканин, Асан
