Join the LSO and Valery Gergiev this January as he conducts two 20th century masterpieces in two concerts at the Barbican.  Stravinsky's pulsating masterpiece was written for Nijinsky's ballet about a prehistoric community which selects a young virgin for ecstatic human sacrifice. ‘We were dumbfounded,' wrote an early listener, ‘overwhelmed by this hurricane which... had taken life by the roots.' Bartók's only opera has just a single, shattering act.  Judith comes to her new husband's home and defies his reluctance to open the castle's chambers. Seven rooms, seven horrors, seven hypnotic musical responses.
